GROZNY - Russian Audit Chamber Chairman, ex-head of the trustee board of the Dynamo soccer club Sergei Stepashin thinks that Russia and Ukraine may hold a joint football championship.

“Active work with the UEFA is in progress. The Ukrainian Football
Federation is ready for the participation of Ukraine’s best clubs in the
joint tournament,” he told Interfax on Sunday.

“Yet the UEFA has the final say. If the participation of clubs from
the joint tournament in the Champions League and Europa League is
approved, we will have a very interesting format of joint championship,”
he stressed.

“I think that fans will gladly watch such matches as Dynamo Kyiv vs. Spartak Moscow,” Stepashin said.

Interfax asked what would happen to soccer in Russia in that case.
“Soccer will continue to develop in Russia. There will be the national
cup and the Premier League,” he said.
