London - The Australian government on Sept. 1 expanded sanctions against Russia in the sphere of defense, finance and the oil and gas industry, according to Australian broadcaster ABC.

The new sanctions include a ban on the export of Russian arms and equipment for the oil and gas industry, limits on Russian state-owned banks’ access to the Australian capital markets, as well as a ban on investment in Crimea or trade with it.

ABC says that there is also talk of tougher targeted financial sanctions and the expansion of the list of persons who are denied entry to Australia.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the new measures were in line with the EU sanctions against Russia.
