The EU should recognize the legality of an abuse of office verdict against imprisoned Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko before she can travel to Germany for medical treatment, according to comments by an official to a German weekly.

Tymoshenko, a former prime minister, is currently serving a seven-year sentence. The EU has long considered the October 2011 verdict to be politically motivated, and has called on Ukraine to implement judicial reforms.
