Ukraine’s president on Sunday threw his weight behind a long-time political ally to remain as prime minister, despite investors’ calls for new reformers to take charge as Kyiv teeters on the edge of recession and heads into tough talks with the International Monetary Fund on fresh assistance.

In a statement, Viktor Yanukovich announced that he had submitted
Mykola Azarov’s candidacy to a new parliament which is to be sworn in on
Wednesday.
