Brussels - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he believes the NATO summit scheduled to be held in Wales on Sept. 4-5 will become one of the most important summits in the history of the Alliance as it will be held during numerous crises.
Rasmussen told a briefing in Brussels that direct intervention by Russia in the events in Ukraine has caused a major crisis in eastern Ukraine. In this regard, he said that the protection of the population and territories of NATO countries remains a key priority of NATO.
Rasmussen said NATO will come up with a combat preparedness action plan, which will become a response to Russia’s aggression and will enable the allies to response to all security challenges, no matter where they arise.
This plan will ensure the presence of the needed resources and equipment at the needed time and will make NATO’s presence in the east more visible, Rasmussen said.
Rasmussen also said the summit is expected to involve a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to discuss the priorities of reforms and decisions on specific steps to help Ukraine.
