RIA Novovsti: Ukrainian language bill protesters send Yanukovych to Belarus

Several hundred opponents of a law elevating the status of Russian in Ukraine camped out in Kyiv on July 5 and several pressed on with hunger strikes as political tensions soared over the contentious issue. The opponents of Ukraine’s controversial new language law that boosts the legal status of Russian sent President Viktor Yanukovych, who celebrates his 62nd birthday on July 9, a ticket to Belarus, UNIAN reported.

The anti-bill activists, who have been rallying against the legislation since July 3 in downtown Kyiv, bought symbolic birthday gifts to Yanukovych, including a suitcase and a train ticket to the Belarusian village of Yanuki. The protesters believe the president is an ethnic Belarusian since his grandfather was born there, Ukraine’s news agency said.

"Director of the Kyiv-based Center for Political and Conflict Studies Mykhailo Pohrebynsky said at a press conference on Friday that about 20% of Ukrainians support the position of "ousting the Russian language from official use" in Ukraine.

"All that the opposition is currently doing is defending the position of a minority of Ukrainian citizens, while a majority calls for raising the status of the Russian language. All this hysteria, hunger strikes and so forth are the result of this, and I think this is an example of totalitarian thinking," the analyst said."

Please Listen to me mr. kpxoxol. You are a payed agent of Putin that is a fact, because I have never seen such stupid and ignorant comments such as yours. You know nothing about our language. Russian and Ukrainian are both the products of one OLD SLAVIC language. Go read some linguistic works or just go to the library. My ancestors spoke this language and it is the only official language in Ukraine. Russian language is not abused or limited, there is Russian language and Literature class in every school in Ukraine. But this new law is made by traitor Yanikovich to break us apart and make us slaves of the Moscow. Well! This will not happen! And you can go to hell!

It would only be logical to assume that the Belarusian and Ukrainian Presidents would be naturally born allies. In fact the opposite is true. Lukashenka is on record as stating that he believes that Vitya is an idiot. Yanu on the other hand considers Alyashenka as an undemocratic dictator. LOL...

The opposition should be ashamed they were needed in the Rada to vote as other bills like the one on procurement were brought up for a vote. Both sides have exploited this issue for all it is worth at expense of the nation. God willing the election will produce a better Rada than the current body.
