As the ocean liner that was taking him to his new life in Canada approached the port of Halifax, Danylo Luciuk looked out on the lights of the city and despaired.

He had just left the darkened wasteland of Europe, a continent devastated by the Second World War, and mistook the glow from the city’s street lights for fires and explosions. He thought he had left one war behind only to find himself in the middle of another.

But another passenger on board explained his misunderstanding and the Ukrainian emigrant came ashore to begin a new chapter in his life.

Born in Volosiv, in western Ukraine, in 1912, Luciuk today is celebrating his 100th birthday in the city he adopted in 1949.
