  Hundreds of antigovernment protesters armed with sticks and tossing firecrackers clashed with riot police Sunday after a massive rally in Kiev to demonstrate against sweeping laws that severely restrict dissent.

Protesters pelted police with rocks and other objects, smashing buses used to defend police lines and setting one alight despite pleas by opposition leaders, including former world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko to stop.

Lines of hundreds of police with shields and helmets stood their ground and fought back with batons.
