The youngest son of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, MP Viktor Yanukovych, has said that it is necessary to improve the development of the Ukraine's cinema infrastructure and by 2017 to create at least 250 cinema halls in Ukraine.

“We see that today it’s reasonable to concentrate on the development of the Ukraine’s cinema infrastructure. On the one hand, now in Ukraine there aren’t enough cinema screens for the films to pay for themselves in distribution. By 2017 we plan to create at least 250 new cinema halls. On the other hand, the modern [cinema] facilities that exist in Ukraine aren’t occupied,” Yanukovych wrote on his blog.

The MP said there was a need to improve the model of allocation state funds for the implementation of cinema projects, for which UAH 135.743 million was foreseen in 2013.

“When the representatives of the cinema market saw that the state was ready to really actively participate in the development of the industry, they united. The biggest cinema producers, distributors, providers and cinema theatre networks entered into the Ukrainian Cinema Association. Together they started to work on improving the legislative field. The three bills I registered last summer were our first joint initiative,” the president’s son said.

According to Yanukovych, due to increasing of the budget support to cinema industry, about 80 movies of different genres are in production.

He also reported his intention to support in parliament initiatives that allow Ukrainian cinema producers to participate in creation of new content, and to adapt Western films for Ukrainian distribution.

“Moreover, for the development of the national market it’s important to toughen penalties for violations of the law on cinematography, in particular, concerning the non-implementation of the national quotas for screening Ukrainian films and showing scenes without distribution certification issued by Derzhkino,” the MP added.
