Eleven civilians have been killed and another 22 have been injured in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, as a result of artillery strikes over the past 24 hours, the city administration said on its Web site.

The situation remains extremely tense in Donetsk on Thursday morning, Aug. 28, it said.

“The Ukrainian state emergency situations service for the Donetsk region has reported that shells damaged an apartment in House No.14 on Ratsionalizatoriv Street. A garage and outbuildings on Tsehliano-Zavodska Street, Postroikomivska Street and in the Petrovsky district were destroyed. The building of School No. 33 was damaged in the Leninsky district – its roof, 1,800 square meters of floors and furniture were destroyed. Furthermore, a shell hit a garage at 71, Kuibyshev Street, destroying a KamAZ truck parked inside. The building of the Akvarius store was hit by a shell in the Kuibyshevsky district,” the city authorities said.

The Kyivsky district of Donetsk came under fire at around 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, leaving more than 60 electrical substations, as well as the Central and Southern water utilities without power. Power supplies were restored to the Central water utility at 9.30 a.m. Specialists are currently working to fix other high-voltage transmission lines.
