You're reading: Acting prosecutor general pledges to apprehend Yanukovych if he comes to Ukraine

If the ousted Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, who is now in Russia, comes to Ukraine, police will take measures to apprehend him, Acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine Oleh Mahnitsky said. Commenting on Russian media reports about the possible arrival of Yanukovych in Donetsk in an interview with Inter TV Channel on April 16 , Mahnitsky said: "Surely, if Viktor Yanukovych comes to Ukraine, measures will be taken to apprehend him, as there are certain proceedings and he has been notified of suspicion. There is a court ruling to detain and deliver him under arrest to a court."

Four criminal proceedings have been opened against Yanukovych and he is charged with serious crimes, Mahnitsky added.

“One of the proceedings is the mass murder of people on Maidan
[Kyiv’s Independence Square]. Yanukovych is charged with two episodes:
premeditated murder with aggravating circumstances and abuse of power. A
large number of investigative actions have been taken in this regard,
and the evidence of his guilt regarding these criminal proceedings has
been collected,” he added.
