African swine fever is registered in Zaporizhia region, the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service of Ukraine has reported.

The report says that losses of pigs from the virus were registered in Komyshuvatka, Zaporizhia region in a private household.

The possible source of infection could be delivered by people from Russia coming to Ukraine on holidays with animal food.

On July 31, 2012, quarantine was introduced in the place where the disease outbroke. The motor road is blocked and transport bypasses the settlement. A working group which left for Zaporizhia region to coordinate the liquidation of the disease has been created.

Veterinary services distributed and delivered disinfection agents, agreed the allocation of the required amount of jellied petrol for burning killed pigs.

The report says that the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service pays attention of citizens who breed pigs not to give them food waste of unknown origin, not to buy animal products on unregulated food markets and not allow pets contacting wild synanthropic animals and strangers.

African swine fever is the causative agent of African swine fever (ASF). ASF infects domestic pigs, warthogs and bushpigs. There is no vaccine or treatment.
