You're reading: Agriculture Ministry gives new grain harvest forecast for 2012 of 45.3 m tonnes

The grain harvest in Ukraine this year will be 45.3 million tonnes, according to the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry, with reference to data from the regions as of early July.

“According to preliminary data from the regions on July 2, 2012, the production of grain and leguminous crops in the current year is expected to reach 45.3 million tonnes,” the ministry said on Monday.

Earlier the ministry expected the grain harvest in 2012 to reach 45-47 million tonnes, against 56.7 million tonnes in 2011.

Ukraine as of July 9 had harvested seven million tonnes of early grain and leguminous crops from 3.6 million hectares, or 36% of the areas.

The average yield of these crops is 19.6 centners per hectare against 28.4 centners per ha last year.

Ukraine threshed two million tonnes of barley from 1.2 million hectares. The average yield of this crop was 17.1 centners per hectare, against 29.3 centners per hectare last year.

Ukraine threshed 4.8 million tonnes of wheat from 2.2 million hectares. The average yield of this crop was 21.2 centners per hectare, against 32.2 centners per hectare last year.

According to the ministry, Ukraine has harvested 16,000 tonnes of rye from 9,000 hectares. The average yield of this crop is 17.8 centners per hectare.

Farmers also harvested winter rapeseed from 200,000 hectares. With the average yield of this crop being 19.6 centners per hectare, Ukraine harvested 391,000 tonnes.
