As many as 2,800 people have been taken captive or have gone missing since fighting broke out in eastern Ukraine in April, the Ukrainian president's envoy for the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbas, Iryna Herashchenko, has said.

“The information I have received from the Security Service and this interdepartmental center indicates that the list of hostages and missing persons currently includes 2,800 people,” she told the Channel 5 television station.

A total of 1,300 people have already been released from captivity, including 820 over the past month, she added.
