You're reading: Almost half of Ukrainians would vote for EU integration, one in five supports Customs Union

If a referendum was held in late May 2015 on Ukraine's joining the European Union, 48.8% of Ukrainians would vote in favor of membership, 28.4% - against, 12.4% found it difficult to answer, and 10.5% wouldn't participate in the vote, according to the results of a poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).

Out of those who said they would vote, voter turnout would be 77%, nearly 63% would support joining the EU, and 37% would be against membership.

In February 2015, some 50.7% supported EU integration against 53.3% in December 2014.

Support for EU membership in different Ukrainian regions varies greatly. In western regions, the vast majority (78%) support EU membership, 11% – against. In the central regions, 57% of citizens would vote in favor, 20% – against. In the southern regions, 40% would vote against membership, 33% – in favor, in the eastern regions – 48% would vote against membership and 22% would vote in favor.

If a referendum was held on Ukrainian membership of the Customs Union, joining Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, 18.6% of respondents would vote in favor, 56.8% would be against it, 12.5% found it difficult to answer, and 12.2% would not to vote.

Of those who said they would participate in this vote, voter turnout would be 75%, 25% would support joining the Customs Union, 75% would be against.

In December 2014, some 17.5% of respondents said they would vote in favor of joining the Customs Union, 58.8% were against, while in February 2014, some 40.6% would vote in favor, and 37.2% – against.

Opposition to membership of the Customs Union is in the majority across Ukraine: in the western regions 79% are against membership with 5% in favor, in the central regions – 61% and 14%; in the south – 46% and 28%, in the east – 38% and 31%.

KIIS conducted the poll through May 19-29, 2015. Personal interviews were conducted with 2,022 respondents in 108 populated areas in every region of Ukraine (except for Crimea). The stochastic selection method was used and all respondents were aged over 18.

In Luhansk region, the research was conducted only in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government, in Donetsk region – in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government and in Donetsk, which is controlled by illegal armed groups.

The margin of error was 3.3% for indexes close to 50%, 2.8% for indexes close to 25%, 2.0% for indexes close to 10%, and 1.4% for indexes close to 5%.
