You're reading: Ammunition to be removed from arsenal in Lozova town by end of 2013, say regional authorities

The cleanup from the explosions at military unit A0829 in the town of Lozova (Kharkiv region) will be finally liquidated by the end of 2013, and the territory of the 61st weapon storage facility will be cleared of high explosives, the press service of Kharkiv regional state administration has reported.

“As a result of the accident, which happened on August 27, 2008,
about 63,000 tonnes of ammunition blew up at the arsenal, and 122
storage facilities were destroyed. A state program to tackle the
consequences of explosion for 2011-2013 was elaborated, and by end of
2013 it has to be implemented,” the press service of the first deputy
head of Kharkiv regional state administration, Valentyn Dulub, quotes
him as saying.

According to him, the work at the arsenal is going according to schedule.

“About 30,000 tonnes of ammunition have to be seized and defused, and
247,000 hectares of technical territory was to be cleared up. As of
June 1, 207,000 hectares of the territory was cleared of ammunition,
18,000 tonnes [of ammunition] defused and 5,000 detonated,” Dulub said.

As reported, in August 2008, a forest fire in Lozova district,
Kharkiv region, spread to the facilities of the 61st arsenal of the
South Operations Command of Ukraine’s Land Forces. The fire caused
ammunition to blow up. About 95,000 tonnes of ammunition was stored
there at the time.
