You're reading: Yanukovych approves anti-terrorism strategy

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has approved a strategy for combating terrorism.

A respective decree of April 25 has been posted on the Web site of the head of state.

The Cabinet of Ministers was given three months to draw up and approve an action plan to implement the strategy.

The decree comes into force from the date of publication.

According to the strategy for combating terrorism, Ukraine shares the concern of the international community due to such a global threat to humanity as the spread of terrorism.

A number of external and internal factors in the country may serve as the reason for an increase in the level of terrorist threats.

It is planned to implement the strategy in 2013-2020 in the following areas: defining and analyzing the causes and conditions promoting the spread of terrorism, improving the legal and institutional framework for the fight against terrorism, improving the existing and developing and implementing new methods of combating terrorism, optimizing the ways and means of protecting human rights and freedoms, protecting society and the state from terrorist attacks, ensuring informational, scientific, personnel and logistics support for implementing the state policy in the field of combating terrorism, raising public awareness about the dangers and scale of terrorism, forming public opinion to promote the effective implementation of state policy in the field of combating terrorism, and developing international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Ukraine’s international cooperation in the fight against terrorism should be conducted through continuing the practice of accession in accordance with Ukrainian legislation to international treaties on combating terrorism that were signed as part of the UN and other international organizations of which Ukraine is a member, cooperating with the EU in the fight against terrorism in line with international law, coordinating, improving and expanding interaction between the subjects fighting terrorism and law enforcement agencies and special services of foreign states, counter-terrorism agencies of the UN, OSCE, NATO, EU, CIS and other international organizations fighting terrorism, on the basis of international agreements, as well as signing international agreements on cooperation in the fight against terrorism between the subjects of the fight against terrorism and the respective authorities of other countries.

The Security Service of Ukraine will coordinate activity on the implementation of the strategy.
