Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko promised during his election campaign that Ukrainian soldiers “will no longer be naked, barefoot and hungry.” But in times of peace a junior Ukrainian officer makes a meager wage of $373 (Hr 5,000). At the same time, their peers in Russia make more than four times that amount, according to LigaBusinessInform, a Ukrainian new site which specializes in legal and business issues.

Kyiv Post+ is a special project covering Russia’s war against Ukraine and the aftermath of the EuroMaidan Revolution.

Currently Ukrainian military officers who take part in the country’s six-month long anti-terrorist operation earn around $1,000 (Hr 14,000), according to the Defense Ministry figures, while wartime wages for sergeants and privates have been raised to $595 (Hr 8,000) as of Sept. 1.

The calculations were made according to Ukraine’s National Bank official exchange rate as of Sept. 22.
