You're reading: Artillery fire heard in Donetsk

The situation in Donetsk remained extremely tense on Aug. 15 afternoon. The sounds of gunfire within the city have subsided, said an Interfax correspondent, citing residents from its Kyivsky, Voroshylivsky and Kalininsky districts.

At the same time, shots fired by heavy weapons are
audible on the outskirts: in the Budionivsky, Kuibyshevsky, Kirovsky
and Leninsky districts.

Eyewitnesses said that many houses in this part of the city are
without electricity which was cut off yesterday because of the
hostilities. Efforts to repair power infrastructure have been thwarted
by the ongoing artillery fire.

Supermarkets and markets are open shorter hours, but have the full range of the essential goods available.

Despite small numbers of passengers, public transport continues running services in Donetsk.

Since local rail links have been damaged, many residents want to
leave by bus. People can be seen queuing for tickets at the Yuzhny
(Southern) coach station: Donetsk residents are looking to leave the
city and head for Mariupol.
