You're reading: At least 620 soldiers killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine

As the Ukrainian army advances in the east, continuing to push rebels from Donetsk, Luhansk, Torez, Ilovaisk and Shakhtarsk as of Aug. 21, it also keep losing forces. At least 620 servicemen have been killed since the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, according to an official count. Moreover, some 2,283 servicemen have been wounded as of Aug. 20.

Civilian casualties are also soaring with 2,152 killed, according to official figures as of Aug. 20. Nearly 416,000 civilians, including more than 34,000 children, have been resettled to different regions of Ukraine while others have fled to Russia, Russian-occupied Crimea and Belarus, according to the United Nations report.   

The anti-terrorist operation lost more than 70 servicemen in the last week. The following is the list of those known to be killed Aug. 12-19:

Aug. 12

Dmytro Tarasov, 28, soldier from 25th airborne brigade of Dnipropetrovsk. Tarasov used to work as a miner at DTEK, one of Ukraine’s largest energy holdings. His friends recalled he was very reliable and dedicated worker and didn’t hesitate to join the army when mobilization starts. “He could have become a great father, but it never happened,” his colleague, Vitaliy Movchan was quoted as saying.

Volodymyr Danylyuk, 23, soldier from Ivano Frankivsk Oblast. His last post in vKontakte page reads “Everybody thought that Ukraine got on her knees, but she got on her knees just to lace up her army boots.” Danylyuk was shot in his head near the checkpoint in Donetsk Oblast. 

Oleksandr Melnykov, 34, soldier of 25th Dnipropetrovsk airborne brigade. He was killed in fight with Russia-backed insurgents near Vuhlehirsk town in Donetsk Oblast. He leaves a wife and a 6-year-old daughter.

Serhiy Karpenko, 29, soldier of Aidar Battalion from Khmelnytsky Oblast. Karpenko’s APC trapped on mine near Metalist town in Luhansk Oblast. He leaves a wife and 11-year-old son in his native town of Netishyn.

Vadym Levkovskiy, soldier from Zhytomyr Oblast. Russian-backed insurgents captured Levkovsky near Mandrykine checkpoint in Donetsk Oblast and killed him. “He was always cheerful and never lost his optimism. Yesterday he was killed by Russian occupants. He will continue his fight in heavean,” Yuriy Syrotyuk, Svoboda party member posted on his Facebook page. Levkovsky leaves a wife and two daughters.

Vitaliy Mykhailenko, 28, soldier from Volyn Oblast. He was killed during the shelling days before his 29th birthday.

Oleksandr Holovko, 28, soldier from Kryviy Rih. He used to serve in 25th airborne brigade and was killed during the shelling in Donetsk Oblast.

Dmytro Zhukov, soldier from 25th Dnipropetrovsk airborne brigade.

Aug. 13

Vitaliy Petrovych, 33, soldier of Kirovohrad-2 Battalion. He was killed during the fight with Russia-backed insurgents for the city of Horlivka in Donetsk Oblast.

Roman Kradozhon, 36, soldier of Kirovohrad-2 Battalion. He was fighting in the anti-terrorist zone for more than 4 months. Kradozhon was killed during the fight with Russia-backed insurgents for the city of Horlivka in Donetsk Oblast.

Mykhailo Tymoshchuk, 27, driver mechanic from Zakarpattya Oblast. He was killed

Serhiy Stadnyk, 33, Ukraine’s National Guard soldier from Kherson. He was killed in fight near Uspenka village in Donetsk Oblast trying to rescue his comrades. Stadnyk leaves a wife and a daughter.

Oleksandr Prytyka, 49, soldier from Vinnytsia Oblast. Prytyka volunteered to join the army in March.  His comrade, Oleh Malyarenko, recalled Prytyka was kind and a cheerful man. “We’ll never forget our compatriot who gave his life for Ukraine,” Malyarenko said.  

Evhen Korniyenko, 22, soldier from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. Korniyenko volunteered to the army in April and spent 4 months in the country’s east. He leaves his parents, brother and sister in Pidhorodne village in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He was killed in fight near Debaltseve in Donetsk Oblast.

Aug. 14 

Taras Lyashuk, 27, soldier from Rivne Oblast. He used to serve in 30 mechanized brigade in Novohrad-Volynskiy.

Serhiy Peshko, 25, soldier from Zhytomyr Oblast. He leaves his family and brother in his native town of Ovruch. He was killed in Luhansk on Aug. 14.

Nazar Paselskiy 21, soldier from Lviv. Paselskiy was killed in a fight in Luhansk. He was the only son in his family.

Valeriy Bondarenko, 24, soldier from Chernihiv Oblast. He died during the shelling near Novosvitlivka village in Luhansk Oblast.

Andriy Marunchak, 48, Aidar Battalion member. Marunchak was an active EuroMaidan Revolution supporter and then volunteered to the army in March. He was killed during the shootout in Luhansk.

Volodymyr Yurychko, 20, soldier from Aidar Battalion. Yurychko was a National Medical University student in Kyiv. He was an active participant of EuroMaidan revolution events and then decided to join the army in March. He was killed in fight near Luhansk.

Ihor Philipchuk, 30, soldier from Volyn Oblast. He was an active EuroMaidan Revolution supporter and then joined Aidar Battalion. He was killed in fight near Luhansk.

Volodymyr Zyuz, 66, from Zaporizhzhiya Oblast. He volunteered to Aidar Battalion in late May. He was Svoboda party member. He died while rescuing his comrades. He leaves his family in Osypenko village in Zaporizhzhiya Oblast.

Petro Radkevych, 37, soldier from Zhytomyr. He leaves a wife and two sons in his native village.

Oleksandr Sokorchuk, 26, soldier from Berdychiv. He leaves his parents and a younger brother. Sokorchuk was killed near Amvrosiivka.

Petro Dubyk, 31, soldier from Zhytomyr Oblast. He was killed during the shelling near Amvrosiivka in Donetsk Oblast. Dybuk leaves a wife in his hometown.  

Vladyslav Rylskiy, 22, soldier from 24 mechanized brigade from Yavoriv (Lviv Oblast). He died month before his birthday.  

Vasyl Martynyuk, soldier from 24 brigade from Zakarpattia Oblast. He was killed in fight near Luhansk.

Mykhailo Romanevych, 19, soldier from Lviv. He was killed in fight near Luhansk.

Aug. 15

Oleksandr Humenyuk,  battalion commander of the local Kyivan Rus Battalion. He volunteered to join the army in March. His comrades recalled they were never afraid to go in fight with their commander. Humenyuk leaves a wife and three sons in Kyiv.

Oleh Onikienko, 44, soldier from Kyiv Oblast. He was killed in fight near Debaltseve in Donetsk Oblast.

Evhen Ermak, soldier from Kyiv Oblast. He was killed near Debaltseve in Donetsk Oblast.  Ermak leaves his family in Brovary.

Aug. 16 

Pylyp  Slobodenyuk, 53, commander of the 1st unit of Aidar Battalion. He was an active EuroMaidan Revolution supporter and then volunteered to the army. “A week ago we sang together with Pypyp. The song was called “My Country”,” Anzhelika Rudnytska, Ukrainian singer, who gave concerts in the country’s east, recalls. “And now I find out he’s dead,” she posted on her Facebook page next day after his death.

Dmytro Dibryvniy, 25, soldier of Aidar Battalion. Dibrivniy was an active EuroMaidan Revolution. “We survived after the hottest days of fights on Hrushevskoho Street in Kyiv. Two weeks ago I told him he’d live a long life. Never happened,” his comrade, Vasyl Yurkiv, said.

Ivan Kachur, 31, mortar man from Aidar Battalon. “Ivan was a real cossack. We used to fight beside each other. Last week we shoot down a separatists’ tank. And some days later Ivan was mortally wounded,” his comrade, Vitaliy, was quoted as saying.

Vladyslav Muravyov, 20, soldier from Lviv Oblast. Muravyov planned to get married when the war with Russia-backed insurgents ends. His comrades found a wedding ring he planned as he wanted to propose a marriage. He was killed when the terrorists opened fire from Grad launchers near Luhansk. Muravyov leaves his parent and fiancé in his native town.

Oleksandr Kolotvyn, 30, Aidar Battalion member. He was killed in fight near Luhansk.

Oleksandr Phil, 19, soldier from Ternopil Oblast. He was a student of a local Agronomical Institute, but then volunteered to the army. He was killed when the terrorists opened fire from Grad launchers near Luhansk. Phil was the only son in his family.

Taras Kuleba, 21, soldier from Lviv Oblast. Kuleba used to serve in 80th brigade. He was killed in Luhansk Oblast when the insurgents opened fire from Grad launcher.

Ivan Pasevych, 24, soldier from Volyn Oblast. He was killed in Luhansk Oblast. Pasevych leaves a wife and a newborn child.

Oleh Tyurykov, 23, soldier from Berehove in Zakarpattia Oblast. He was killed in fight with Russia-backed insurgents in Luhansk Oblast.

Ihor Dobrovolsky, 22, soldier from Lviv Oblast. He was killed month before his 23rd birthday when the insurgents opened fire from Grad launcher. He leaves his parents in his hometown.

Nazar Pepryk,33, soldier of 80th airborne brigade from Lviv Oblast. “Thank you for giving your life for us,” Pepryk’s friend, Yliana Dzeba, posted on his VKontakte page days after his death.

Viktor Bulavenko, 24, soldier from Odesa Oblast. He used to serve in 28th brigade and was killed near Blahodatne village in Donetsk Oblast.

Oleksandr Tsybulskiy, 20, soldier from Odesa Oblast. He enrolled to Ukraine’s army in 2014 and was killed near Blahodatne village in Donetsk Oblast. He left his parents and brothers in Shyryaeve village in Odesa Oblast.

Oleksandr Druz, 19, soldier from from Odesa Oblast.

Aug. 17

Andriy Kozyubchyk, 33, soldier from Ivano Frankivsk. He used to be a Pravyi Sector nationalist party member. “We’ve lost our energetic and cheerful friend today,” his friend, Andriy Stempitskiy posted to his Facebook page. “My children can’t believe that as he’s dead. He used to be like an older brother for them.” He was killed in fight near Luhansk.

Vadym Rychkov, 39, soldier of 25th Dnipropetrovsk brigade. He volunteered to the army in March after Russia’s annexation of Crimea peninsula. His wife, Tetiana Rychkova then risked her life and started and delivered medicine and equipment to the 25th brigade. “When I got the message of your death I didn’t cry, I howled with pain. I still believed that’s a mistake and you will call me in the morning and say you’re alive. I never get that call,” Tetiana Rychkova, his wife, posted to her Facebook page on Aug. 21. Rychkov’s 11-year-old son lost his father.

Oleksiy Zinchenko, 37, commander of 37th special marine unit. He was serving for more than 19 years and was killed in fight with Russia-backed insurgents in Donetsk.

Evhen Kornaphel, 25, soldier of 37th special marine unit. He leaves a wife and 2-year-old daughter.

Volodymyr Popovych, 25, policeman from Lviv Oblast. He was killed in fight near Krymske village in Luhansk Oblast.

Dmytro Herasymuk, soldier from Volyn Oblast. Herasymyk was wounded in his head during the fight in Luhansk Oblast and died later in the hospital in Dnipropetrovsk.

Maksym Mushta, 25, academic instructor of Yaguar special unit. He was killed during the shelling near Yasynuvata village in Donetsk Oblast. Mushta leaves a wife and 1.5-year-old son.

Eduard Hutsul, 37, soldier from 25th Dnipropetrovsk brigade. He was killed when the terrorist opened fire in Shakhtarsk city in Donetsk Oblast.

Oleksiy Emanov, 26, soldier from Kryviv Rih. He used to serve in 25th brigade and was killed in Luhansk Oblast.

Vitaliy Korol, 34, soldier from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He was killed in fight in Luhansk Oblast.

Vasyl Kondratenko, 26, soldier from Sumy Oblast. He wanted to become a serviceman and enrolled to Ukraine’s army in 2006. He used to serve in 95th airborne brigade in Zhytomyr and then deployed to the country’s east when mobilization started. He called his wife to congratulate her with their wedding anniversary and was killed later that day.

Aug. 18 

Serhiy Podhorniy, 50, soldier from Kherson Oblast. He volunteered to join Kyiv 2 Battalion after being a centurion on Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti during EuroMaidan Revolution. He was killed in Chernukhine village trying to rescue civilians who were used as a live human shield by Russia-backed separatists.

Artur Perov, 22, soldier from Zaporizhzhiya. He was mortally wounded in the fight near Luhansk.

Roman Kharchenko, 29, soldier from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He used to serve in Dnipro-1 Battalion and was killed during the liberation of Ilovaisk city in Donetsk Oblast.

Serhiy Taphiychuk, 30, unit commander of Dnipro-1 Battalion. He was killed during the liberation of Ilovaisk city in Donetsk Oblast.

Aug. 19 

Mark Paslavsky, 55, soldier of an American-Ukrainian origin known as “Franko.” He used to work as  investment banker and served in the US army for about 10 years. “Mark’s killed. He changed his (US) citizenship to join Donbas Battalion. He defended his native country. A real warrior,” his friend, Sergiy Gusovsky, posted on his Facebook page the day after Paslavsky’s death.

Serhiy Shkarivskiy, (known as ‘Shults’), Donbas Battalion member, a husband of Mykhailyna Skoryk, Ukraine’s journalist. He was killed in fight near Ilovaisk in Donetsk Oblast.

Dmytro Polehenko, soldier from Chernihiv. He was killed when the terrorists opened fire from Grad launchers in Luhansk Oblast.
