Austrian President Heinz Fischer says he doubts that Western sanctions against Russia will be effective.

“I am convinced that nobody can win due to sanctions. Sanctions are not a means of obtaining benefits. Nobody will benefit from sanctions,” Fischer said at a press conference after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Fischer says that “some believe that sanctions are a tool that will help to enforce something if other means do not work.”

“But my opinion is that it’s better act in a different way, by approaching each other through negotiations,” Fischer said.

President says that sanctions are often used as ultima ratio. “Today we don’t see whether we can find a better solution than sanctions,” he added.
