You're reading: Azarov: Ukraine considering gas contract termination through court

The Russian authorities' position on the gas issues forces Ukraine to think about seeking a court ruling to terminate their gas supply contract, said Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.

In an interview with the Ukrainian weekly Korrespondent Azarov said that he has already told Putin during gas talks: "You are driving us into a corner, from which we have only one exit: contract termination."

The Ukrainian government has already consulted with national and international experts over the prospects for litigation with Moscow and is ready to institute proceedings, Azarov told the weekly.

Talks with Russia are being extremely complecated by non-transparency of the market: it is difficult for Ukraine to prove to its Russian partners that the gas price for Ukraine is inflated in comparison with other European consumers, he said.

"Any allegation about a lower price for blue fuel, for instance, for Slovakia and Germany, is proved documentarily by these countries. Moscow is retorting with documents of its own making, whereby these countries buy gas at much higher prices," a Korrespondent journalist, who spoke to Azarov, wrote in his article.

Russia is already aware of the hopelessness of the situation in Ukraine and the need to make concessions, the Ukrainian prime minister said.
