Ukraine intends to hold large-scale modernization of nuclear power units of its nuclear power plants to extend their operating life, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

"We need to extend the operating life of nuclear power plants in 2014 through 2020, and it requires a lot of work to upgrade our NPPs," he said during a meeting on improving the safety of operation of NPPs at Energoatom’s emergency and technical center in the village of Bilohorodka in Kyiv region on April 24.

According to the prime minister, the modernization of one of the units of Yuzhnoukrainsk NPP will be completed in the first quarter of 2013, after which similar work will start at Zaporizhia NPP. The premier noted that all safety requirements should be observed during the modernization and funding for all the activities should be sufficient.

Azarov said that the modernization of one reactor costs Hr 4 billion.
