Ukraine has developed a program to support the Ukrainian language, while guaranteeing the protection of minority languages, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said.
"Nobody is against the Ukrainian language. Quite the contrary, we will now develop a large-scale program to support the Ukrainian language. This should be done... We should support the Ukrainian language. But we won't allow anyone to eradicate all languages of the peoples who live in Ukraine," he said in Odesa on Tuesday, while speaking with locals.
Azarov also added: "We have adopted the law [on the principles of state language policy], and now we will secure it in documents... I know that yesterday your [Odesa] City Council took a respective decision, and the regional council will soon take [a similar decision]."
As reported, Odesa City Council, at an extraordinary session on August 13, approved a resolution on the implementation of the law on the principles of state language policy in the city of Odesa, granting Russian the status of a regional language in the city.
According to the council's decision, from now on Russian could be used as a regional language in the city in office work, official documents, at schools and universities, in advertising and municipal toponymy.

PS At the above link, people are making comments from different parts of Ukraine, about closure of TVi in other parts of of Ukraine to this very day.
It would appear that Kolya is up to his old tricks again (ie. baffling us with bullshit). "Nobody is against the Ukrainian language. Quite the contrary, we will now develop a large-scale program to develop the Ukrainian language. But we won't allow anyone to eradicate all languages of the peoples who live in Ukraine." What program? Exactly who is out to eradicate all of the minority languages in Ukraine? Is the Ukrainian language supposed to be replaced by minority languages where those languages exceed 10% of a regional population? What constitutes a region? Is it an oblast? Is it a city? Is it a village? Is it an undefined area? Who determines or has the authority to make such a decision? All of these questions are open to vague interpretations and as such it can only mean one thing. The Government (AKA the Party of Regions) will do all of the interpretations regardless of the views of the local population. Just another example of POR styled "democracy" in action.

Despite general instructions, mass operations in the Ukrainian SSR were special in that they were ethnically oriented. Charges of “Ukrainian chauvinism”, “nationalistic deviations”, sympathy for the “national counterrevolution” became the universal labels Cheka officers attached to innocent people as they invented criminal cases.
