You're reading: Barroso doesn’t believe ASEM summit was ‘darkened’ by Ukraine issue

Brussels - European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he does not believe that the ASEM meeting was 'darkened' by the Ukraine issue because the debate on this issue was very useful.

Barroso said he would not say that the summit was ‘darkened’ by the Ukraine issue, adding that the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin provided a good chance to discuss the Ukraine issue. Barroso also said ASEM is a forum of stability for the entire Eurasian region.

The so-called retreat, the meeting of the leaders chaired by Herman van Rompuy, addressed the most sensitive issues, from the issue of the South China Sea issue to the situation in Ukraine, Barroso said. He said the ASEM summit is becoming increasingly mature, both in terms of economic cooperation and political dialogue.
