You're reading: Batkivschyna to appeal against decision preventing opposition leaders from participation in elections

The Batkivschyna united opposition will appeal against the decision of the Kyiv Administrative Court of Appeals, which declared the refusal of the Central Election Commission to register ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko as candidates for MPs legal.

“We’re certainly going to appeal this decision,” the head of the Batkivschyna election headquarters, Oleksandr Turchynov, said at a briefing after the judicial sitting on Saturday.

Turchynov said that “there are no constitutional grounds” for refusal to register Tymoshenko and Lutsenko as candidates for MPs.

He noted that the united opposition understands that “Ukraine has no justice and courts, but we believe we will reach the European Court of Justice and our colleagues – Tymoshenko and Lutsenko – will not only be with us, they will be free, again work with us and will be elected to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.”

Turchynov said the opposition would appeal against the decision made today at the Higher Administrative Court of Appeals, which will have within three days to consider the appeal.

Tymoshenko’s defender Serhiy Vlasenko, in turn, said that the law foresees two days to appeal today’s decision.

He added that a relevant appeal would be filed on Monday.
