Belarus bans imports of pork from Zaporizhia region due to African swine fever

Belarus from August 3, 2012 has banned imports of pork from Zaporizhia region due to an outbreak of African swine fever.

Minsk – Belarus from August 3, 2012 has banned imports of pork from Zaporizhia region due to an outbreak of African swine fever.

"From August 3, 2012, temporary restrictions on imports and transit of live pigs, pork and products made of it from Zaporizhia region of Ukraine," the department of the veterinary and food oversight of the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus has told Interfax-Zapad.

The ban concerns leather, horn, hoof and intestinal materials, bristle, meat of wild boars, hunter's trophies, fodder and fodder supplements for animals, used equipment for breeding, slaughtering and processing of pigs, the department said.

In addition, the department said that permits on imports of the above-mentioned goods from Zaporizhia region issued earlier are canceled.

Earlier Belarus introduced the similar ban on imports of pigs from Tver and Volgograd regions of Russia.

African swine fever infects domestic pigs, warthogs and wild pigs. There is no vaccine or treatment.
