Minsk - The Belarusian Council of Ministers has endorsed a Belarusian-Ukrainian intergovernmental agreement on the demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border.

The document instructs the Foreign Ministry to forward notification to Ukraine on the completion of the necessary internal procedures in Belarus for the agreement to take effect.

The Ukrainian Cabinet of ministers endorsed the same agreement on Nov. 12, 2014.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed decree No. 422 on the demarcation of Belarus’s border with Ukraine on Sept. 1, 2014.

Belarus and Ukraine signed a border treaty on May 12, 1997, and the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada ratified it on July 18, 1997. Lukashenko signed the law on ratifying the Belarusian-Ukrainian border treaty on May 17, 2010.

Belarus tied the demarcation to Kyiv’s repayment of its debts to Minsk. Ukraine admitted a $134 million debt to Belarus in summer 2010.

The demarcation agreement between Ukraine and Belarus took effect on June 18, 2013.

The chiefs of the Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Polish border services signed an agreement on the junction point of their borders on March 14, 2013. The demarcation of the Ukrainian-Polish border had been finished and simultaneously the demarcation of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border was started at this time.
