You're reading: Belarusian foreign minister: Crisis in Ukraine escalates from regional to international one

The situation in Ukraine has escalated from a domestic political and regional issue into an international one, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makey said.

“The problem is that the situation in Ukraine already becomes not purely Ukrainian and not even regional one but it has already reached an international level,” Makey said on air of the Belarusian TV channel STV on July 27.

“I refer to the latest events related to the fall of the Malaysian plane shot down above Ukraine,” Makey said.

“The issues of regional and international security come to the fore,” he said.

When asked about the attitude towards the situation in Ukraine, the minister said: “How could a normal person regard what is happening in Ukraine? Of course, negatively.”

The situation in Ukraine is “a completely orchestrated campaign, behind which economic, firstly energy, and political interests stand,” Makey said.

“Time will put everything into perspective,” he said.

As to the Belarusian stance on the Ukrainian situation, it has always been clear and plain, the Belarusian foreign minister said.

“We supported that peace and calm were introduced in Ukraine via dialogue and cooperation of all forces interested and involved in this process,” he said.

These approaches remain unchanged, Makey said. “Ukraine is an important economic partner for us and a brotherly nation as well. We would like that the situation stabilizes there as quickly as possible and we would be able to continue previous teamwork in all cooperation sectors,” the minister said.
