You're reading: Bill cancelling language law registered in parliament

A bill cancelling the law on the state language policy adopted on July 3 has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada.

At the same time, the text of the bill has not been posted on the Web
site of the Ukrainian parliament. The author of the bill is MP Yuriy
Karmazin (Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense faction).

As reported, on July 3, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law on the
state language policy, which foresees a significant expansion of the
spheres of use of the Russian language.

The parliamentary opposition said that the law had been passed with a
large number of violations, so it is planning to boycott the work of
the parliament’s current session, which ends on July 6.

Shortly after the adoption of the law, the opposition began a protest
near the building of the Ukrainian House in Kyiv, where Ukrainian
President Viktor Yanukovych planned to hold a final press conference.

The protesters spent all night near the Ukrainian House, but in the
morning Berkut riot police officers tried to push them back, which led
to a scuffle.

Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn and Vice Speaker Mykola Tomenko
announced their resignation at the morning session of parliament.

President Yanukovych canceled the press conference and invited the
leadership of parliament and parliamentary factions to discuss the
situation in the Verkhovna Rada in connection with events that occurred
in the morning.
