London - The European Union is ready to impose additional restrictive measures on Russia if pro-Russian separatists in southeastern Ukraine establish control over the Donetsk airport and the city of Mariupol, Bloomberg has reported.

The agency referred to a source familiar with German government policy, who also said that such actions of illegal armed groups will have unpredicted consequences.

On Sept. 30, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she saw no change in Russia’s position on the conflict in Ukraine.

‘The situation in Ukraine is anything but satisfactory. There is no protection of the border along the entire Luhansk and Donetsk region – no control, no buffer zones,’ she said.

Merkel also said that the EU was still far from cancelling current restrictive measures against Russia.
