You're reading: BYT-Batkivschyna faction deputy Odarchenko charged with organizing illegal rally near Ukrainian House

A protocol has been drawn up against BYT-Batkivschyna faction deputy Yuriy Odarchenko for committing an administrative offense, the press service of the Kyiv city branch of the Batkivschyna Party has reported.

In the protocol, the deputy was charged with organizing an illegal rally and thus creating obstacles to the celebration by the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv of U.S. Independence Day on July 4. The protocol was drawn up near the Ukrainian House on July 5.

The protocol notes that Odarchenko, as the organizer of the rally in defense of the Ukrainian language on Yevropeiska Square, violated a ruling of the District Administrative Court of Kyiv banning the holding of rallies in the central part of Kyiv on July 4-9.

“The court ruling includes an interesting declaration, which, in particular, notes that the right to hold a peaceful rally is limited by the fact that on July 4, 2012, the U.S. Embassy celebrates the Independence Day of its country and the rally creates obstacles to this holiday,” the MP said.

He said that the government had used the Embassy of the United States, a country that particularly values freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, in order to “cover up its dirty deals.”

The ruling of the District Administrative Court does not mention any opposition parties or Odarchenko. The court ruling states that the stockholders of CJSC Zhytomyrski Lasoschi, citizen Toruba, the Communist Party of Ukraine and “others” have been banned from holding peaceful rallies.

“Since the court ruling cannot concern an indefinite number of persons, and among opposition members near the Ukrainian House on Yevropeiska Square there is nobody with the name of ‘others,’ the court ruling has nothing to do with the rally or Yuriy Odarchenko,” the party said.
