A scientific center for testing for GMOs (genetically modified organisms) is to be created on the basis of the Institute of Food Biotechnology and Genomics at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

As the press service of Education, Science, Youth and Sports Ministry reported on Friday, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a corresponding order.

This decision was taken after the introduction in Ukraine of a system of obligatory testing of vegetable raw materials, foods and drugs for dangerous GMO content, as well as the marking of corresponding products.

The institute will test food for the presence of GMOs and assess methods for detecting them, including the selection of samples and the identification of cases of GMO contamination of food or feed, and settling disputes between the subjects regarding the results of the tests.

This establishment has necessary instrumental and material-technical basis for the functioning of a scientific methodological center with the functions of a reference laboratory to coordinate the work of the network of GMO-testing laboratories.
