You're reading: Cabinet to consider issue of road traffic safety at next meeting

The Cabinet of Ministers at its next meeting will discuss the issue of road traffic safety, Ukraine Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

“We will hold a meeting in the nearest future, hear all organizations responsible for road traffic safety and define who will be responsible for that,” he said at a meeting with representatives of public organizations on road traffic safety in Kyiv on Friday.

The prime minister said that to hold such a meeting it is necessary to create an ad hoc group consisting of the representatives of such public organizations.

Having heard proposals of public figures on how to change the situation related to an excessive accident rate on roads, Azarov noted that the measures proposed are quite accessible for the government. In particular, he expressed opinion that it is reasonable to establish an organization in Ukraine, which would be responsible for road traffic safety.

“Are we are capable of compiling a list of the most dangerous places in Ukraine, which are already marked with headstones, wreaths? We are able to allocate funds to make these road sections safer,” said Azarov.

The premier agreed with the opinion on the need to analyze the state of road signs, which, according to drivers, do not always correspond to their purpose.

According to the World Health Organization, the death rate from road accidents in the world will climb from the 9th to 5th position by 2030.

In Ukraine, the death rate from road accidents is 12 per 100,000 people, while in Sweden and Norway the figure is 4-5 persons.

In addition, Ukraine annually loses over $5 billion from road accidents. These data were voiced at the meeting of the prime minister with the representatives of public organizations on road traffic safety.
