Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird on Dec. 12 welcomed the announcement in Melbourne made by Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that Australia would open an interim embassy co-located within the Canadian embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine.

“Canada and Australia continue to be partners in the development of Ukraine
and are working to support the Ukrainian people in realizing their democratic
aspirations, free of Russian aggression and militarism,” Canada’s Foreign
Ministry quotes Baird as saying.

“We are pleased that Canada can play a role in bringing the international
community together to further support the Ukrainian people. This agreement is
just another example of how Canada and Australia are collaborating in an effort
to advance democratic principles and human rights around the world,” the
minister said.

Poroshenko is on a state visit to Australia from December 10-13.
