Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have discussed bilateral relations by telephone, the Ukrainian president's press office said.

“Trudeau pledged Canada’s continued resolute support for Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity and in implementing systemic domestic reforms,” the press office said in a statement released on Nov. 5 evening.

For his part, Poroshenko congratulated Trudeau on being sworn in as Canada’s prime minister on Nov. 4, noting the significant voter support won by the Liberal Party in the parliamentary elections.

“The Canadian prime minister said that the Ukrainian president was the first foreign leader to have congratulated him and to talk to him while in office. He stressed the important role of Ukrainians in life in Canada,” the statement reads.

President Poroshenko also noted the appointment of two members in the new Canadian government, Chrystia Freeland and MaryAnn Mihychuk, both of Ukrainian origin.

During the conversation, the president invited the Canadian prime minister to pay a friendly visit to Ukraine.
