The Central Election Commission (CEC) has refused to register 21 Volya party candidates for early parliamentary elections in single-seat constituencies.

According to CEC press service, this decision was unanimously made at a sitting of the commission on Sept. 22.

“The commission didn’t receive decisions from the executive office of the Volya political party on the nomination of the candidates from this party, as foreseen by Point 2 of Part 1, Article 55 of the law on the election of MPs. Therefore, from a legal point of view, the documents provided by the Volya political party can’t become the basis for the CEC to make a decision on the registration of candidates for deputy,” reads the statement.

In particular, the CEC received a decision of the extraordinary and national convention of the Volya party on the nomination of candidates for deputy dated September 9. However, the signatures of the secretary and chairman of the convention weren’t legalized with the party’s seal.

“Under such circumstances, the CEC, which builds its activities upon the following principles: the rule of law, legality, independency, objectivity, competency, professionalism, a collective approach to considering and solving issues, justification of the decisions made, openness and publicity, couldn’t make any other decision. The registration of candidates on the basis of documents like those presented by the Volya political party, would be denied for any other party regardless of its name or political program,” reads the statement.

The Volya party was created in June 2014 by representatives of Volya initiative, Euromaidan’s public sector and activists from different regions of Ukraine working on reforms and lustration.

Early parliamentary elections in Ukraine are scheduled for Oct. 26, 2014.
