You're reading: CEC tells most polling stations in Ukraine’s presidential election opened on time; in two eastern regions elections held in 9 out of 34 districts

The overwhelming majority of polling stations in Ukraine opened on time for the extraordinary presidential election on Sunday, in Luhansk region elections are held in two out of 12 districts, in Donetsk region - in seven out of 22, chairman of the Central Election Commission Mykha i lo Okhendovsky announced.

He noted that most of the polling stations in all regions, except Donetsk and Luhansk regions, opened on time, even though some delays were indentified.

Okhendovsky confirmed that Molotov cocktails had been thrown at a polling station in Kherson region but the fire was promptly contained, therefore the election documents and ballots were undamaged and the station was opened on time.

He also said that ballots for all district election commission were delivered to Luhansk and Donetsk regions but it has been impossible so far to hand them to the commissions because the commissions don’t function as commission members received threats from illegal paramilitary forces.

He said in Luhansk region 98 out of 197 polling stations opened in election district No. 114 (Bilovodsk) and 186 out of 200 polling stations opened in election district No. 115 (Svatove).

In Donetsk region in election district No. 47 (Oleksandrivka) 19 out of 114 polling stations opened. Sloviansk is included in the election district, but the polling stations did not open there.

In election district No. 49 (Dobropillia) 77 out of 100 polling stations opened, in election district 50 (Krasnoarmiysk) 55 out of 130 polling stations opened. The election documents and ballots were handed to two election districts in Mariupol: 112 out of 116 polling stations opened in election district No. 58 and 90 out of 100 polling stations in election district No. 59. The ballots were also delivered to election district No. 61 (Volnovakha) to 60 out of 123 polling stations and election district No. 62 (Starobesheve) to 40 out of 140 polling stations.

Okhendovsky said that during the day the authorities will try to hand the ballots to other district and polling stations, although there are few chances to do this.
