The Ukrainian Central Election Commission has said that the so-called referendums held in Donetsk and Luhansk regions on May 11 will have no legal consequences.

“The official position of the Central Election Commission is that the actions that took place in some territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions on May 11 have no relation to the expression of the will of the people of Ukraine, specifically, on specific territories of Ukraine. For this reason, the appropriate actions have no legal consequences,” Central Election Commission Deputy Chairman Andriy Mahera told a press conference in Kyiv on May 12.

Mahera said law enforcement agencies should take measures and investigate whether actions aimed at overthrowing the constitutional system took place during the referendums held in the southeastern regions of Ukraine.

“I think that’s how such actions should be classified,” Mahera said.
