Chairman of the European Council and Prime Minister of Sweden, Fredrik Reinfeldt, has said he supports Ukraine's aspirations to join the European Union.

He said this at a joint press conference with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko in Kyiv on Friday after the Ukraine-EU summit.

"We’re supporting Ukraine’s aspirations in achieving closer relations with the EU," he said.

The chairman of the European Council stressed that during the EU summit he urged Ukraine to make a proper contribution "so as to achieve a good agreement in Copenhagen [on global climate change]."

According to him, the sides also discussed the results of a meeting that took place last week in Stockholm, where a total of EUR 90 million was allocated for Ukraine to improve energy efficiency in the country.

"We think that this will help find the most important ways to use the energy efficient technologies to improve the situation with the climate," he said.
