Ukraine is to equip and protect its border with Russia, and the country plans to raise European financial aid for this purpose, deputy head of the presidential administration Valeriy Chaly has said.

“This situation that has happened showed us that the border between Ukraine and Russia has to be absolutely protected from illegal crossing. Control over it should be resumed,” Chaly said at a briefing on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

He noted that before the armed hostilities the border was under control by the two sides.

In addition, during the process of protecting the clear position in control over the so-called humanitarian convoy Ukraine achieved that Ukrainian border guard was staying at Russian border checkpoints.

“However, this does not resolve the problem – a large part of the border is not under control,” Chaly said.

He said he believes that Ukraine should ensure control not over checkpoint, but control along the whole border, which has not yet been demarcated.

“One of the next issues is the attraction of the financial support and European projects for equipping the Ukrainian-Russian border,” Chaly said.

He mentioned the demarcation experience of the Transdniestrian section of the Ukrainian-Moldovan border.

“The efficient operation of EUBAM shows that we could propose starting this work,” Chaly said.
