You're reading: Clashes erupt between pro-Russian protesters and Maidan activists in Mykolaiv

Activists of Maidan self-defense units and people's militia in the Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv have pushed pro-Russian protesters back from the building of the Mykolaiv regional administration and have dismantled their tent camp, the local online news service NikVesti has reported.

Chanting “Long Live Ukraine!”, the activists of Maidan self-defense units and Mykolaiv’s people’s militia” forced the pro-Russian demonstrators to retreat to their usual position near the Monument to Konstantin Olshansky and his heroic comrades-in-arms, it said.

Shortly afterwards, several hundred Maidan activists approached the monument and demanded that the pro-Russian protesters remove their tent camp from the site on their own.

Officers of law enforcement agencies formed a line between the sides. However the position of the pro-Russian protests was encircled after another group of Maidan activists arrived there.

Several people were injured in the ensuing clashes, NikVesti said.

“There is also an unverified report about an elderly man who allegedly sustained injuries to his face,” it said.

As a result of the clashes, the pro-Russian demonstrators were dispersed, and Maidan activists started to dismantle their tent camp.

“When commenting on their actions to journalists, the Maidan activists said that they were holding a “subbotnik” clean-up event in the park,” the website said.
