You're reading: Russian Foreign Ministry: Coming elections in Ukraine create legal mishap

Moscow – Moscow thinks that Viktor Yanukovych remains the legitimate president of Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

“He remains the legitimate president and no one dismissed him using legitimate methods, which the Ukrainian authorities have,” Lukashevich told reporters in Moscow on Thursday, May 22.

Due to the coming presidential elections in Ukraine “a legal mishap” emerges, he said.

“To hold presidential elections without going through existing domestic state procedures and with a current legitimate president, however one treats him, the question on the legitimacy of the preparations for the elections which are being carried out emerges,” Lukashevich said.

“We will watch how preparations for these elections proceed and will make our conclusions following its results. We can not voice anything but outrage with the atmosphere in which preparations for these elections are held,” the spokesman said.

The presidential elections in Ukraine are scheduled for May 25.
