You're reading: Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union opposes reviewing anti-Russian sanctions

Brussels - The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (COREPER) which on Tuesday considered how the ceasefire and peace plan are being complied with in Ukraine has not found any grounds yet for changing its view on the situation, a European diplomat who is informed about the outcomes of the meeting told Interfax on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The Committee has decided to leave everything unchanged, he said. The EU has been watching the compliance with the ceasefire and peace plan but for now it is not possible to say whether this is happening reliably and steadily, he said. The assessment process will continue, as instructed by the European Council, until the end of October, the source said.

It means that so far the member states see no grounds for reviewing the EU restrictive measures against Russia.

The ambassadors have observed some reassuring signs in the implementation of the Minsk agreements yet believe the Minsk protocol must be implemented in full, the source said.

The EU will continue to closely watch local developments and assess progress in the implementation of the Minsk protocol, the diplomat said.

So far it is difficult to say when the Committee will meet next time to discuss this matter but it will continue assessing the situation and this work might continue through the end of October, he said.
