You're reading: Constitutional Court declares unconstitutional Crimean accession to Russia and referendum

Constitutional Court of Ukraine has declared the resolution of March 6 of the Supreme Council of Crimea to hold a Crimean-wide referendum as unconstitutional.

The court took this decision after consideration of the
constitutional petitions of acting President of Ukraine and Verkhovna
Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov and Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for
Human Rights Valeriya Lutkovska.

The decision of the court means that Crimean parliamentary resolution
is unconstitutional and becomes invalid on the day the court takes its
decision.

Besides, the decision foresees that activities of the Crimea’s
commission on holding Crimean referendum, as well as territorial and
district committees should be halted.

The Constitutional Court of Ukraine obliged the Council of Ministers
of Crimea to stop financing preparations for the referendum, and to
destroy ballots and promotion materials.

The decision of the court is obligatory for implementation on the territory of Ukraine, is final, and cannot be appealed
