Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Thomas Hammarberg considers the introduction of the institution of the president's representative for children's rights in Ukraine to be an important step, the president's press service reported on Tuesday.

The representative of the Council of Europe met with the Ukrainian ombudsperson for children, Yuriy Pavlenko.

The parties discussed the issues of children’s and parents’ rights, prevention of violations of these rights in the family and also the problem of defending the rights of children that are in trouble with the law.

Pavlenko noted that the protection of children’s rights is now an object of the attention of Ukrainian president.

He also added that a national conference on the defense of children’s rights would be held on Oct 13.

Moreover, Ukraine is to join the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC) in the near future, Pavlenko said.
