Kyiv's Pechersky District Court has decided to arrest Major-General of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Viktor Nazarov for two months, Radio Liberty has reported.

In addition, the court set bail at Hr 365,000 (300 minimum wages). The court made such a decision on Tuesday evening, Nov. 25.

At the same time, the Segodnya newspaper wrote on Wednesday, Nov. 26 that the meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 25 had been attended by representatives of the Defense Ministry and the General Staff who stood bail for the major-general. Nazarov denied his guilt and involvement in the crash of an Il-76 plane.

His defense team also strongly disagreed with the accusations.

“Lawyer Oleksandr Miroshnyk repeated several times that it was necessary not to bring Nazarov to justice, but to present an award to him, because thanks to his efforts the enemy is now not in Kyiv and not outside the building of the Pechersky court. When asked then who is to blame for the tragedy, Miroshnyk said that the responsibility lies with those who opened fire on the plane, that is militants,” the newspaper wrote.

As reported, Major-General of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Viktor Nazarov was declared a suspect of negligence that led to the deaths of 49 Ukrainian servicemen during their redeployment on board an Il-76 military transport aircraft to Luhansk. After that he felt unwell and was hospitalized.

According to Ukrainian Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema, the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office conducted an investigation and “unfortunately, investigators who probed the event found that one of the causes of this tragedy was a negligent attitude of servicemen to the fulfillment of their duties.”
