You're reading: Court rejects appeal by ex-judge Zvarych against his verdict

Kyiv's Court of Appeals has not satisfied an appeal lodged by ex-judge Ihor Zvarych against the verdict of the Obolonsky District Court in Kyiv sentencing him to ten years in prison, the Vysoky Zamok online publication reported on April 4.

The publication said that while submitting an appeal against the court verdict, Zvarych insisted that the SBU illegally bugged his office and that videos that proved facts of bribery should not have been considered in court. In his appeal, the former judge also insisted on a full deciphering of phone calls made in October 2007 with the late Lviv Regional Governor Petro Oliynyk, in which the latter allegedly confessed that investigators from the Prosecutor General’s Office and former President Viktor Yushchenko made him give evidence against Zvarych.

"By submitting an appeal, Zvarych hoped that the criminal case opened against him would be sent for further investigation. However, Kyiv’s Court of Appeals upheld the verdict of the Obolonsky District Court. From now on, Zvarych can now hope only for the consideration of his appeal in the Higher Specialized Court," the publication said.

Zvarych is currently in Lukyanivsky pre-trial detention center and if he fails to file a cassation appeal with the Higher Specialized Court, he will be sent to serve a sentence in a penal colony for the former employees of law enforcement agencies.
