You're reading: Criminal charges ‘came as surprise’ to Kuchma

Ukraine's second President (1994-2005) Leonid Kuchma has said that he was surprised by the opening of a criminal case against him.

"[It was] like a bolt from the blue," he told reporters on Wednesday before his interrogation at the main investigation department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, when asked whether he expected the criminal proceedings and a summons to the PGO.

"Like you, I learned about this from the media. So I have come today and I am waiting to find out what they’re going to tell me," he said.

Kuchma said that he had already testified at the PGO as a witness many times.

"Nothing new could have come out during this time. They have nothing except for the tapes, which as you know, cannot be a proof of anything," he added.
