You're reading: Dnipropetrovsk blasts organizers demanded police transfer $4.5 million to their account

The organizers of a series of blasts that hit Dnipropetrovsk in April this year contacted the police via the Internet, Chief of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Ihor Kalinin has said.

"We received messages [from the criminals] to our e-mail via the Internet and [they also sent] an sms. They used a mobile phone… They made certain demands," he said at a press conference in Dnipropetrovsk on Friday.

According to him, the organizers of the blasts, who demanded the transfer of $4.5 million to their account.

"We allowed them to withdraw a small sum," Kalinin said.

According to Kalinin, the suspects downloaded recommendations on making a bomb from the Internet. The criminals left them in the garbage bins and they exploded after 15 minutes. The bombers used this time to reach the next blast site.

He added that the criminals demanded the transfer of the money, "otherwise the blasts will go on."

Kalinin also said that the criminals demanded money, "otherwise the blasts will go on" and children may suffer.

He said that the detainees are under 40 years old, and one of them is connected to scientific activities.

The SBU Chief said that it was decided to detain the suspects on May 30.
